Colour photo of green heart-shaped rock.

heart/stone

when I look at you I see green, a conundrum
of indecipherable stone despite
eons of effort

smooth yet unyielding I see your heart clearly
though others think you a rock, falling for
your hardened shield

you’re slightly misshapen, perhaps missing a piece?
I wonder if others have seen your glow or was it
just for me?

I rub your softness along my lips
absentmindedly … as if I could do so whenever
I wanted

you fit perfectly in my palm, at home there
your heart in mine, but you are not there
why are you not there?

I set you down, flushed with my warmth
and watch the gifted heat of my love
evaporating
