I did not tremble
standing there
on the other side of the bars

I could hear clearly
though blood throbbed my ears
Pulsing

The air feathered my flushed cheeks
lifting my nose to the scent
hairs on my forearm

I was inert
not by fear but by possibility
None but ourselves can free the mind

How does one fly when one has not practiced flying?
My muscles held no memory
though my arms floated up

I was not fluent in freedom
I knew not the words to speak
but heard them echo within

liberty … liberty … liberty …
